Ireland 1 had a remarkable run in the 2017 edition in Austria. They qualified for the Top Division of 5 Teams (Traditional A) from their performance in the Divisioning Rounds, where they beat traditional Ice Hockey Powerhouses Norway (3-1), Austria 4, and drew with Switzerland.

In the Top division they were able to hold their own against Switzerland, losing narrowly, and competed well against powerhouses of the game Russia, Finland and Czech Republic and played off in the Traditional B1 section, where they lost to Sweden in the Semi-Finals and Switzerland in the Bronze Medal Game.

Ireland 2 qualified for the Traditional D section, where they finished in 5th after beating Argentina.

From 1987 to 1998 Irish Teams based in Dundonald Ice Bowl, Castlereagh competed in various iterations of a Scottish League. Before the advent of the Belfast Giants and the Odyssey Arena there was only the Ice Bowl in Dundonald for Irish Ice Hockey and so teams had to travel overseas to Scotland to play competitively.

In 1987-88 the Dundonald Redwings finished a commendable third place in the league and the following year a new team the Castlereagh Flames finished fourth. both teams were knocked out of the Playoff League Cup in the Semi-Final stage. In 1989-90 the Castlereagh Flames finished second, the best performance by an Irish team so far, but were unable to field a team in the League Cup Playoffs. In 1990-91 the Flames finished third, and in 1991-92 fourth.

There then followed a lull in Irish involvement in Scottish Ice Hockey until the Castlereagh Knights entered the Northern Premier League in 1996-97.

Report

Following a brief Ice Hockey League in Ireland in the 1990s, another Irish Ice Hockey League started up in 2007, lasting until 2010 when the Dundalk Ice Bowl closed due to the economic crisis in Ireland at the time.

Dundalk Bulls would win the first two titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09, and then the Charlestown Chiefs, based in West Dublin, would win a curtailed 2009-10 season.

The League would then fold due to lack of available ice, until 2015 when the Dundonald Ice Bowl became available for Ice Hockey, leading to a new Cross-Border Cup.

Report

The Ice Hockey Superleague was the top level Ice Hockey League in Britain and Ireland prior to the formation of the Elite Ice Hockey League in 2003.

The Belfast Giants were created in 2000 as part of the peace process with aid of American money and played in the 5000-seat Oddyssey Arena.

In their first season they finished sixth, but failed to qualify out of their playoff group. In 2001-02 they won the League on 70 Points, 21 ahead of their nearest challengers Ayr Scottish Eagles, but again failed to qualify out of the Playoff Group. They finished second in the League in 2002-03, one point behind Sheffield Steelers, but won the Playoff Group before going on to win the Final 5-3 against the London Knights.
