Terry Kelly “Superfan” [Ref: 5]

Report

Terry Kelly was born in Toronto to Irish Immigrant parents, but was sent back to Belfast at the age of 3 to be brought up by his grandparents. After attending St. Malachy’s in Belfast, he returned to his parents in St. John, New Brunswick. He went on a hitch-hiking trip to Canada in 1949, where, on a lark, in Montreal he took in a professional Ice Hockey, Canadian Football, and Baseball games within 24 hours. He continued on to study at the University of New Brunswick in Canada, where he graduated with a law degree at 21, was called to the Ontario bar at 22, and became Queen’s Counsel at 33.

As well as a successful law practice, which included drug prosecutions, he continued as a sports fan, attending 11 consecutive Soccer World Cups (1996 to 2006) and many Ice Hockey, Baseball and Canadian Football matches, in Canada, as well as Scotland, Mexico City. He also played for the Soccer team at the University of New Brunswick.

One of his greatest achievements was to replace the Hambly Arena in Oshawa, Ontario, which had burnt down in 1953. He raised $1.3 Million in 1964 to replace it. The Civic Arena in Oshawa was named “Terry Kelly” Stadium in his honour. He was President of the Oshawa Soccer Association from 1963 to 1967 and was also a founding director of the Oshawa Green Gaels Lacrosse Club and a founder of the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame into which he inducted in 1995.

Terry Kelly was named director of the Toronto Maple Leafs National Hockey League team (one of the biggest sporting organisations in the World) in 1991. He died, aged 83 from heart failure in 2015.

Irish Ice Hockey League A League Results 2009-10 [Ref: 1-11]

Report

Charlestown Chiefs and Dundalk Bulls finished joint top of the Irish Ice Hockey League A League in 2009-10 with 5 Wins and 1 Loss each, after winning one game against each other and winning all four other games played each.

The League was cut short by the decision by the other three teams in the League – Castlereagh Spartans (Dundonald, Castlereagh), Dublin Rams and Flyers IHC (Dublin) to pull out of the League after Christmas for various reasons.

This left the League with the decision to play a single game, on Saturday, 8th May 2010, between the Charlestown Chiefs and Dundalk Bulls for the Championship.

The chiefs were comfortable winners on the night, going two goals up after three minutes thanks to Aigars Brencis and Viktors Serdjukovs and by the end of the first period it was 4-0 with two further goals added by the Chiefs.

In the second period the Chiefs added another three goals from Serdjukovs again, Viktors Vaiciulionis, and Patrick Buda. That left the score 7-0 going into the Final Period. The Third period saw the Chiefs increase their tally to 12, although the Bulls scored two consolation goals.

With the Final score 12-2 the Charlestown Chiefs were crowned IIHL A League Champions for 2009-10 and Viktors Serdjukovs and Sean Dooley picked up Man of the Match Awards for the Chiefs and Bulls respectively.

Inline Hockey Ireland Hibernia League 1 Results 2015-16 [Ref: 5-8]

Report

Armagh Stars (12-2-1), Longford Hawks (14-0-0), Waterford Vikings (10-2-1) and Clare Waves (13-0-0) were the four division winners of the Inline Hockey Ireland League 1 – the second level of Inline Hockey in Ireland – in 2015-16.

After the season Cork Wolfpack were promoted to the Elite League and new team Midland Thunder (Longford) replaced Maigh Eo Bulls, who took a year out and UCC Skulls and Killa Beez who dropped out. Kilkenny Bandits returned after a years absence.

About

After a number of seasons where there were separate Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland Inline Hockey Leagues with an All-Ireland Playoff, the first Hibernia All-Ireland League was introduced in 2015-16. League 1 was the second level of Inline Hockey in Ireland in 2015-16.

East Coast Blaze, Dun Dealgan Warriors and Dublin Wolves had joined from the Northern Ireland Inline Hockey Association as well as the 2nd team of the Northern Cyclones and Bangor Chiefs and Cork Wolfpack and Waterford Shadows from the National Inline Hockey League after 2014-15.

Non-Returning teams were Belfast Pitbulls, Belfast Bruins and Raiders from the NIIHA and Galway Pitbulls and Kilkenny Bandits from the NIHL. These teams were repaced by the Clare Waves, Maigh Eo Bulls, Clare Badgers, West Coast Pirates, Killa Beez, Ballymena Vandals, UCC Skulls, and Waterford Vikings.
